Engraving vs Printing: Which Should You Choose for Your Gift?
Laser engraving and sublimation printing each have their strengths. Here is how they compare on colour, durability, materials and care, and which to choose for your gift.

When you personalise a gift with us, it is made in one of two ways. It is either laser engraved, where a laser marks the design directly into the material, or printed using dye sublimation, which bonds full-colour ink into a specially coated surface. Both are done by hand to order in the Laser & Ink workshop in Sowerby Bridge, and both produce gifts that last. But they look and feel very different, and each suits different ideas.
This guide explains how each one works, how they compare, and which to pick for your gift.
How laser engraving works
We engrave using a diode laser, which focuses a beam of light to a tiny point. On wood, that point scorches the very top layer, darkening it in shades from pale honey to deep brown. A photo is turned into a pattern of thousands of tiny dots, so from a normal distance you see smooth tones and a recognisable face.
On glass, the laser creates a frosted white etch instead. Because glasses are round, we use a rotary attachment that slowly turns the glass while the laser works, so the design wraps neatly around the curve.
Engraving does not add anything to the surface. It changes the material itself, which is why it cannot peel, rub off or wash away. For the full detail, see our guide to how laser engraving works.
How sublimation printing works
Dye sublimation starts with a design printed onto special transfer paper using sublimation inks. That paper is pressed against the item under heat and pressure. The heat turns the ink into a gas, which bonds into a polymer coating on the item (or into polyester fibres, for fabrics). When it cools, the colour is part of the surface rather than sitting on top of it like a sticker.
That is why sublimation can only be used on items made for it: specially coated mugs, slate, crystal, metal and polyester fabrics. It is also why our clothing and bags are polyester rather than cotton.
Side-by-side comparison
| Laser engraving | Sublimation printing | |
|---|---|---|
| Colour | Tones of the material: browns on wood, frosted white on glass | Full, vivid colour |
| Look and feel | Natural, warm, tactile and timeless | Bright, photographic and detailed |
| Durability | Permanent; the mark is in the material itself | Long-lasting; ink is bonded into the coating, not on top |
| Photos | Best with close-ups, strong contrast and simple backgrounds | Handles groups, colour and busy scenes well |
| Text and logos | Excellent, crisp and classic | Excellent, in any colour |
| Every piece unique? | Yes; grain and texture show through | Consistent from one to the next |
| Our products | Wooden coasters and beer mats, pint glasses | Mugs, slate, crystal, bottles, phone cases, jewellery, clothing, bags, Christmas gifts |
Durability
Both methods are made to last, but in different ways.
Engraving is as permanent as it gets. On our engraved pint glasses, the frosted etch will not wash off. On wood, the engraving is part of the coaster. The wood itself is what needs looking after.
Sublimation is very durable because the colour is inside the coating rather than painted on. Our photo mugs are dishwasher and microwave safe. Other printed items, like stainless steel bottles and tumblers, are hand wash only, which helps keep them looking their best for longer.
Colour
This is often the deciding factor. If colour is part of the point, such as a bright family holiday photo, a child’s drawing, a football kit or a ginger cat, choose printing. Engraving will turn all of those into shades of brown or white.
If you want something understated and natural, engraving is lovely precisely because it does not shout. A name and a date engraved into wood has a quiet, classic quality that suits wedding, anniversary and home bar gifts especially well.
Materials
- Engraved: our photo engraved wooden coasters and engraved wooden beer mats are 95mm round, 7mm thick, with four rubber feet. Our pint glasses hold a full 20oz pint.
- Printed: ceramic mugs, natural rock slate, optical crystal, tempered glass chopping boards (printed on the underside), stainless steel bottles and tumblers, phone cases, jewellery and keyrings, clothing and bags.
Care
| Item | Method | Care |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden coasters and beer mats | Engraved | Wipe clean; not dishwasher safe; do not soak |
| Pint glasses | Engraved | Hand wash recommended |
| Photo mugs | Printed | Dishwasher and microwave safe |
| Water bottles and tumblers | Printed | Hand wash only |
| Slate and hardboard coasters | Printed | Wipe clean |
| Glass chopping board | Printed | Hand wash; heat resistant |
| T-shirts and hoodies | Printed | Wash inside out at 30°C |
Which should you choose?
Choose engraving if…
- You want a natural, warm, timeless look.
- Your design is mostly text: names, dates, a bar name, initials.
- Your photo is a close-up of one or two faces, or a pet, with good contrast.
- It is for a home bar, a wedding, a fifth anniversary (wood!) or someone who prefers understated gifts.
Choose printing if…
- Colour matters.
- Your photo is a group, a landscape or a busy scene.
- You want to use a child’s drawing, artwork or a pattern.
- You need it dishwasher safe, as with our mugs.
Still not sure? Our photo tips guide has a quick test: convert your photo to black and white on your phone. If it still looks great, it will engrave well. If it loses its magic, choose a printed gift.
Checked by a real person, every time
Whichever you choose, every design is prepared and checked by hand before it is made. If we think a photo will not engrave well, we will suggest an alternative rather than going ahead anyway. If something arrives faulty or misprinted, we will replace it. Personalised items cannot be returned for a change of mind, so if you are unsure about anything, ask us first.
Everything is made in 1–3 working days and delivered by Royal Mail in 2–3 working days, for £4.99 anywhere in the UK. Browse our laser engraved gifts or personalised photo gifts, or for something one-off, see our custom laser engraving service.
