Leaving gifts from colleagues

Workplace collections usually want something that can be signed off quickly and that everyone can see. A photo slate or crystal photo block with a team photo and a caption such as "32 years at the depot" becomes a keepsake for the mantelpiece. A photo mug reading "Officially Retired" is a cheerful smaller option.

Tips for office collections

• Agree the wording in advance and get one person to check the spelling of their name.
• Choose a team photo where faces are clearly visible. Large groups suit the bigger crystal block or slate rather than small items.
• Order at least a week before the leaving do to allow 1–3 working days for making and 2–3 working days for Royal Mail.

When it's a parent retiring, a family photo means more than a work one. A crystal block with the grandchildren, or a mug reading "Retired: now ask Grandad", gives them something to smile at on their first free Monday morning.
